Cooling wells providing pre-cooled air through pipes and tunnels in an auditorium for 700 people.
Gujarat Vidyapith Sabha Khand is a 700 seat lecture auditorium to include activities of prayer meetings, lectures, seminars as well as discussions for larger groups. The brief required the design of a large span structure that provides human comfort levels without being dependent on the use of air-conditioning systems.
Evaporative cooling with mechanical help was put to use to provide human comfort. The system uses evaporative cooling with earth tunnel to supply cool air to the hall. The air is cooled in the external wells by passing it through a spray of water. This air travels in pipes laid 4-6 mrts below the ground as the ambient temperature of soil at that level is found to be approximately 24-25C. Thus cooled air is supplied at various points in the hall to cover the volume of the auditorium and the sectional profile was evolved to facilitate air movement.
