Depending on the underlying terrain and location, it is a footpath, a floating pontoon, a covered galleria, or a rotating bridge. The once so glorious and vital terrain of the Rotterdam Dry-Dock Corporation is situated on the archipel 'Heijplaat' in the Rotterdam Harbour.
Because the harbour activities in Rotterdam shift more and more towards the North Sea, the RDM-terrain will also loose its last harbour function as container storage. The design proposal "Stoa" is a development strategy for the coming 20 years for this area.
The Stoa is a long esplanade which connects the several islands of Heijplaat. Depending on the underlying terrain and location, it is a footpath, a floating pontoon, a covered galleria, or a rotating bridge. During time new programs can be connected or disconnected to this minimal intervention, like a camping, podium, water taxi, cit? des sciences, centre equestre a.o.
The Stoa is a powerful fundament, a blueprint, which interlinks a chain of spatial experiences. By implementing the Stoa as a landscape element, the harbour 'Dokhaven' can undergo a transformation process, in which the most important characteristics and icons are being kept. It's use will change within the organized and the unpredictable.
