This is a residential school for children from the 5th to the 10th standard. Despite a programme that required large numbers of children per class, and three divisions for each standard. Our aim was to de-institutionalize the physical environment. Using climate and the natural features of the land as our guiding features we have developed a school design that inspires kids to play and hang out in the outdoors, along with their more "formal" schooling. We have also ensured that libraries, labs and art rooms are well interspersed into the layout so that they are "experienced" as part of the journey in and around the school. The natural boulders on the site are incorporated as play-gyms. Finally, the street like outdoor spaces are akin to the shaded streets of Rajasthan, where the shadows of the buildings and their jagged skyline create comfortable well scaled outdoor areas for the kids to recreate and "work" in.
The entire built environment will incorporate learning experiences that range from simple measurements painted or carved into the floor, to telescopes and sun-dials in the landscape, incorporating the planets to scale, in the structure of the staircase. The idea of play spaces, relax spaces and safe outdoor spaces to experience nature informed the design.
