Ravi Shankar was the founder of Gujarat State, a freedom fighter and trusted colleague of Mahatma Gandhi. He was cremated in Bochasan, a village 140 km from Ahmedabad. People come and offer prayers at the site of his tomb.
A new memorial samadhi was required to supplement an existing memorial used by the Gujarat Vidyapeeth, an institution instigated by Gandhi. Students of the organisation grow their own food and spin and weave their own cloth; following principles set down by the Mahatma and Ravi Shankar.
