Retaining historical character: The Qutab Colonnade is located within the Qutab Minar precinct in Mehrauli, South Delhi. An area of enormous historical significance and character, it has grown to become the cultural hub of New Delhi. The Qutab Colonnade commands magnificent views of the Qutab Minar on one side and the lush greenery of the Delhi Ridge of the other.
Juxtaposition of old and new: The original structure of the Colonnade was randomly added to over the years, and the result is a disparate set of buildings that present a design challenge in making it a cohesive whole. A fine balance needs to be drawn between the original structure that needs restoration and where the new is juxtaposed with the old.
Spatial discovery and discourse: The client, a patron of the Arts, envisages the complex as an art focussed space that encourages interaction, discourse and ideas exchange between Members, Artists, Connoisseurs and the general public. Areas to be created include a library, bar, cine theatre, gallery space, meeting rooms and a range of dining spaces. The design attempts to create a sense of discovery and discourse while moving through these distinct spaces, all united by the central focus of Art.
