The hand-pulled rickshaw, ferrying people on the streets of Kolkata, are on the verge of being banned on humanitarian grounds. For, indeed, it?s unimaginable that in this day and age, come rain or shine, impoverished rickshaw-walas still mill across the city, lugging their human load, to earn one square meal a day. Yet when the rickshaws are taken off the streets, Kolkata will lose some of its fairy-dust. It's really hard to imagine Kolkata without the tread of the rickshaw-puller on the cobbled streets with the bells ringing to match the rhythm of his steps. These pictures are a tribute to the men who will go down in history.
