The Paranur Railway Station is widely regarded as a pioneering vision to transform India's public railway infrastructure. The station is the first point of entry for the tens-of-thousands of visitors to New Chennai or the Mahindra World City, on a daily basis. Shilpa Architects designed the station to capture the grandeur of the Mahindra World City, as visitors enter the City. The arresting undulating form was inspired by a wave that thrusts skyward from an eye-level perspective of the passengers, as they alight the trains. This feature heightens a sense of arrival, as passengers exit the station to enter the Mahindra World City from a high point. The green tone of the station reiterates a focus on sustainability that remains central to the design. Besides incorporating several elements that capture global best practices, Shilpa's designs are carefully planned to befit this trendsetting venture, by integrating amenities for rail passengers from established models of transport infrastructure in countries such as Japan, China, Korea, France, and Norway, where high volume of passenger traffic combines efficiency and passenger comfort.

Ticket reservation areas, passenger waiting rooms, staff offices, drinking water fountains, strategically designed passenger walkways, night lighting, overhead pedestrian bridges, garbage disposals, contoured ceilings, durable materials, carefully coordinated colors, signage, disability friendly infrastructure, landscaping, fountains and even public art, are some of the few aspects that define this widely acclaimed station, that is truly world-class and yet distinctly suited for India.
