This is a short-listed proposal for an open national competition for the redevelopment of the old Central Jail in Bangalore. The project attempts to address two self-contradictory sets of desires of modern urban life: a) Retreating from the city vs. Accessibility for all.
The strategy to achieve this is the concept of the Park/Plaza. The Plaza acts as the connector with the city and allows for activities that celebrate the quintessential urban experience such as temporary shopping, food outlets, open-air performance, and other informal activities such as festivals, and art installations. It is not bounded and can be used at all times of the day. In contrast, the Park is introverted and allows for spaces of retreat from the bustle of city-life. It is entered through specific manned entries, and houses activities which are closed after regular hours. The distinct experience of the Park/ Plaza is accentuated by the choice of materials, landscaping, and design of street furniture.
