Mr.Cheluvaraya Swamy residence required a mix of activities to come together in one programme. Structurally, the 600mm x 600mm columns were taken a little inside and the floors cantilever out. This allowed surfaces to move back and forth creating niches, storages etc. There are 5 bedrooms distributed on 3 floors. The master bed and the two son's bedrooms are conceived as continuous bays along the length of the site with their own seating, dress, toilets & balconies or verandahs. The space between these bays has the informal living spaces on the ground & first floor. The circulation ensures that one visually experiences the spaces at various levels of the residence. The access to the third floor is through a home theatre which starts on the second floor & opens up to the terrace through the party area leading to the gym.
The main idea of the design was to connect all the informal and interactive areas of the house both visually & with a circulation pattern that ensures movement along these zones. The columns are on the inside with the slabs cantilevering out to allow a more dynamic exploration of the surfaces that move back & forth to house niches, storage spaces etc.,The pool, home theatre, party area, billiards, jacuzzi/spa, gym and the terrace are placed sequentially along the 2nd & the 3rd floors to form the main recreational zone of the house.
