The design concept for Caravan Hands, a former flour mill converted into an art gallery, came from an initial understanding of the local culture, the existing materials and the context of the address. Aiming to create a scheme that was as comfortable, familiar and utilitarian with as much flexibility given the tight space constraints, with a contrast that was the sophistication of modularity, which would work in sync with the high detail of work to be displayed in the gallery.

Removing the superficial layers of plaster and generic paint revealed the inherent and beautiful raw brick walls, elegant arched brick foundations and hidden wooden doorways, which have been retained and exposed as reference to the built form?s history and place. Juxtaposing these strong elements with a quaint vocabulary of finished elements which included a palette of pristine, clean edged solid wood along with a completely customized system of hardware as well the flexible shelving/hanging system which evolved from the rudimentary idea of pegs and sockets.

Caravan Hands hopes to initiate a humble, laid back and forgotten dialogue with the souls who choose to stop by, in the midst of this metropolis? bid to race faster in the name of urbanism.
