This small project was one of the first projects handled by Abhikram, and it brought forth many realisations.
The objective was to create a small play / nursery classroom area that had to be built in a reserved area of the school compound and hence no constructional activity would be permitted in the legal framework.
A pit seemed to be the best option, dug out of the ground with many levels and a temporary roof structure; in this case the geodesic dome made from metal tubes and covered with a plastic sheet, sandwiched between two layers of bamboo matting, a lightweight a lot of sense. This met with all the needs for Nursery level education and more. With this project, they dispelled the notion of rigid classroom by providing active play spaces for children. The light / ventilation factor was handled creatively by the space between the ground and the dome provided at places. It also provided entrance/ exit into the space.
Swings and ladders and other items were suspended from the roof structure as well as making sure that the children learn through fun and play. Sadly, this structure no longer exists, as the other interests, as the other interests of the school in terms of space, etc. had to be met twelve years later.
