The Tiny Sliding Home, Ranwar We designed a matchbox size apartment to maximise space in an Urban Village
Ranwar Village in Bandra, one of the original pakhadis of Bandra, is a modern day time capsule. It is a 400 year old hamlet within Bandra, which preserves an age-old charm. The chance of living in a village, yet maximising space to fit in modern apartment living and requirements was the design challenge
We started by planning an expandable space, within a seemingly tiny 160 sq.ft format. We worked out sliding walls to expand and contract space on demand, by using a common 5' vestibule in all the formats.
The sliding walls allowed us to carve out functionality in the tiny space. The King-sized bed splits to create a day setting, and joins to form the bedroom at night. Walls are doodled on t personalize the space
The Sliding walls part to create a walk-in closet, with large storage possibilities, with a full length mirror and changing area.
The Workstation ties up one end of the Sliding system, and is the used space when the sliding walls are shut. This enables a productive work environment, with full-length softboards and work influences put up.
