Smoke House Deli, Lavelle Road Our hand-drawn homage to the life and times of Michael Lavelle
Our brand new Smoke House Deli at Lavelle Road references the life and times of Michael Lavelle, Bangalore's original Gold prospector. We hand-drew diverse references to the exciting age of the Gold rush in Bangalore at the new Deli.
Interesting and tangential references were drawn to the Kolar Gold Mines, from which gold went to ancient sites such as Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. We also referenced the age of finishing schools and croquet, contemporary with the colonial age of the city.
The Bar at the new Deli creates a smaller pre-dinner waiting area, where we illustrated various references to hunting, the age of the Gentleman hunter, and strange clues to the surprising past of the city.
The Balcony at the Smoke House Deli looks onto the iconic Lavelle Road, where we created a tiny, stylish colonial style sit-out, with retro styled Fans and elements. Small cutout birds sit inside white bird-cages, to complete the eccentricity.
The Deli and main dining area are surrounded by illustrated references to the Colonial age of the city, and various clues lead you to the the exciting life and times of Michael Lavelle, his military conquests, and his famous residence on the same road.
We worked on detailed illustrations at the Booths, for guests having longer meals, to engage them with fascinating facts about the Kolar gold mines, discovered by Lavelle, and then mined exclusively by him for a short period before his retirement.
Food and drink was references in various shelving areas, with our Smoke House style illustrations. The props and jars are connected to various dishes on the Deli menu, and offer tangential clues to the food served up at the Deli.
The Smoke House Deli at Lavelle Road is another in the series of city pride experiments at the studio, to illustrate clues to the best of the cities the brand occupies, and try to show the way to a city that can still be.
