1962: United Thinner Agencies, a company set up for manufacturing of wood polish products and thinner and its products were sold under the brand name of Sheenlac.

1971: on 6th November Sphinax Chemical Industries began.

1973: Wood polish in HDPE bottles launched first ever time in India. Also, for requirements of users small packing was introduced.

1977: Sphinax Chemical Industries became a Pvt. Ltd. company in order to satisfy needs of market.

1983: Thinners in pet bottles were launched and the construction of church in Thrissur, Kerala, and it was handed over to ‘Malabar Independent Syrian Church’. In this, a new branch office was opened in Kochi.

Further, in the year 1984, 1986 and 1987, the company opened new branch offices in Vijayawada, Bangalore, and Coimbatore respectively.

1989: Honorable president of India Shri Venkatraman awarded the founder of the company Mr. John Peter with the ‘Best Entrepreneur Award’.

1992: Mrs. Mary John, the proprietor of Sheenlac Group was awarded with outstanding award by Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Shri M Karunanidhi.

1993: a new manufacturing factory was set up and named and ‘surface coating industries’. It was founded to produce thinner and wood polish on a large scale.

1997: a research and development unit was initiated in Ambattur due to the growing requirements of industry.

1998: with the rise in rate of production of paint t0 10 kilo litre per batch, a new branch office at Yeshwantpur in Bangalore was established.

2000: Mrs. Mary John was awarded with ‘women entrepreneur award’. In order to meet the high demands, the surface coating industries was expanded in 12 acres of land to produce 1,00,000 litre thinners and wood polish per day.

2002: Rashtriya samman award from the year 2000 to 2001 and the chairperson of Govt. of India CBDT, Smt. S.K. Nigam awarded this award to Mr. Sudhir John, proprietor of surface coating industries.

In the year 2003, 2006 and 2007, new branch offices Cuttack, Ahmadabad, Pondicherry, Kolkata, Goa, Kochi, Calicut, Coimbatore and Ludhiana.

2008: branch office opened in Raipur.

2010: a new factory was founded on the outer edge of Chennai at Vadakanallur to expand manufacturing capability of the company.

Technical Training (Internal

The Research and development of the company trains its staff as the products manufactured by them need proper knowledge of application. Apart from the training of induction programs in detail, there is a criterion of a particular number of training programs that every individual sales person is required to undergo in order to get promotions in job.

Technical Training (External)

In the external technical training, the research and development department caters training to dealers and polishers when the company launches any new product. Elaborated training was offered when water based coatings were introduced helping the polishers and dealers to appreciate and understand the concept well. The initiatives to continue this external training is primarily focused to create new technical sales officers or TSOs.

Human Skills Training

A training calendar is set up quarterly on a regular basis so as to improve and enhance human skills.

Sales Management Training

The company has a proprietary approach of its own towards sales training. All the sales persons across the region use a common language and allocate a common energy and zeal because of the use of such kinds of tools.
