This residence is in the outskirts of Ahmedabad on a one-acre plot, was intended to be their retreat from the rather busy life schedule in the city. It is a two bedroom accommodation, with an open to sky courtyard in the centre, which has a sunken area. This area is designed for use as a shallow water body with a fountain for summer cooling, as a pool for their young children, as an ambience element with floating lamps & flowers during parties, and also as an informal sitting area with cushions, when dry.
The organization of the plan focuses around the central courtyard with the public spaces opening onto it without any doors. The large verandahs with their extended platforms have been an integral part for large gatherings. The two bedrooms with their attached toilets also have their access from the same courtyard.
The residence maintains a very comfortable temperature throughout the year, requiring minimal use of mechanical cooling. Use of lime, apart from reducing the heat, will increase the longevity of the building. It will also lend greater hygiene to it, with lime being a highly alkaline, and therefore anti-fungal and anti-bacterial material.
The Owners, having enjoyed their weekend home for the past 6 years, have become advocates of the use of traditional materials & technologies in contemporary buildings.
