SALT DESIGN's Downtown Streetscape Master Plan for the historic mining town of Nanticoke lays the groundwork for this city to transform itself through the introduction of a complete streets approach. Through site-specific strategies that capitalize on Nanticoke's rich natural, cultural and historic resources, the streetscape will be able to host a renewed and vibrant civic life. The Master Plan outlines the infrastructure to manage stormwater ecologically and make Nanticoke a model for sustainability. Improvements are inspired by the history and scenic natural landscape, and aim to rebrand Nanticoke as a Recreation Destinationtown, bringing eco-tourism dollars to the local economy. Blending metals and vibrant blues in signage and site furnishings energize the street with color and evoke the area's industrial history and ecological context of the Susquehanna River. Streetside rain gardens capture and clean the first flush of stormwater, while lushly planted tree trenches cool the streetscape and infiltrate runoff from sidewalks. Streetscape markers along the sidewalk educate the public about historic buildings, significant events and people who have influenced the City over time.
