An Unspoiled Site For A Modest Cottage Built In The 1920s Is The Canvas For This Thoughtfully Designed Master Plan And Architectural Renovation By Scott Mitchell Studio. Situated On 2.2 Acres On Further Lane In The Seaside Hamptons Town Of Amagansett, The Project Embodies A Modern Interpretation Of An 18th Century Long Island Farm, Complete With A Main House And Supporting Outbuildings. Four Discrete Structures Arranged In A Sophisticated Rectilinear Plan On The Site Define The Boundaries Of The Varied Exterior Spaces. The Deliberate Positioning Of The Main House, Gym, Garden House, And Pool House Adhere To A Series Of Axial Alignments Across The Landscape, Which Serves As The Primary Organizing Element. Between Them, Several Outdoor Rooms Are Carefully Framed, Including A Pergola-covered Living Room With A Freestanding Fireplace And A Dining Room Marked By An 80-ft Long Custom Table Between An Arcade Of 70 Year-old Apple Trees.

As Modernism Passes Its 100 Year-old Mark, Scott Looks Back Even Further, To The Inherently Modernist Architecture Of Traditional Farm Buildings To Guide His Design Of The House And Landscape. The 5,000 Sq. Ft Addition To The Existing House Authentically Employs The Architectural Vocabulary Of An 18th Century Farmhouse. The Honest Structural Expression Of Wood Found In Old Barns Is Replicated Throughout The House And The Other Structures On The Site. Clear Western Red Cedar And Pennsylvania Bluestone Serve As Building Materials, And Indigenous Plant Species Fill The Tailored Gardens Throughout The Landscape. Through Architecture, Landscape, And Most Notably A Comprehensive Master Plan Strategy, The Project Achieves A Design That Respectfully Acknowledges The Historical Context Of Its Site, While Advancing Its Own Modern Sensibility In The Function Of A Contemporary Home And Property.
