The hand-pulled rickshaw, ferrying people on the streets of Kolkata, are on the verge of being banned on humanitarian grounds. For, indeed, it?s unimaginable that in this day and age, come rain or shine, impoverished rickshaw-walas still mill across the city, lugging their human load, to earn one square meal a day. Yet when the rickshaws are taken off the streets, Kolkata will lose some of its fairy-dust.
