The Concept For This Beachfront Restaurant Draws Inspiration From Traditional Japanese Design, As Interpreted By The Early Modernist Architect, Rudolf Schindler, In The Design For His Own Los Angeles Home. The Original Design Scheme For The Restaurant Emphasized The Marriage Of Traditional Japanese And Modernist Elements, Setting The Mood For This Contemporary Sushi Restaurant Situated On An Iconic Stretch Of Beach In Malibu. Through Scale, Proportion, And Materiality, The Design References The Cuisine's Historical And Cultural Context. However, Despite Employing Modernist Forms Built From Traditional Materials And Methods, The Architecture Is Profoundly Contemporary.

With Visual Access To The Ocean A Primary Goal Guiding The Building's Design And Layout, Efforts Were Made To Provide For Guests A Maximum Unobstructed View. A Wall Of Sliding Doors On The Restaurant's Beach Side Disappears To Reveal A Framed View Of The Ocean And An Expansive, Tiered Terrace That Extends From The Main Dining Room. On The Opposing Wall A 40-foot Long Glass-enclosed Indigenous Tide Pool Was Proposed To Provide For Guests An Ever-changing Micro Seascape And A Flood Of Natural Light.
