The design of this weekend house in Alibaug is focussed on locating the structure sensitively in response to the natural gradient and minimal disruption of existing trees. The site has a large number of mango trees and the house is nestled between the trees along an existing stream which flows through the site.
The house has been conceived as a series of separate pavilions which accommodate the different functions and are tied together by a verandah which runs along the entire length of the house. All the principal spaces open onto the verandah with the swimming pool located along the verandah to ensure that all rooms face the pool. The verandah with the pool deck becomes the principal social space of the house. Architecturally, the house is extremely simple with a strong duality between the low volume verandah space and the higher volume living spaces of the pavilions.
