The shop cum house located along the busy market place in T- Narsimpur, Mysore was bound by buildings on 3 sides. With the road side occupied by the shop, the place was dear to the owner of the house Mr. M G Manjunath and thus it filled with memories and also because of the common walls he was not allowed to demolish the structure, which called for this whole new approach. A Study of the existing context and the house revealed that it had to depend on a skylight for all its ventilation and light as it was bound on all sides. There was chaos within small tight available foot print of 18' x 60' with problems relating to basics of efficient usage of space, lighting and ventilation. Our intervention was to restructure the space which reflected his need for not only efficient spaces but to bring out his interest in the new, in a way to emulate the new generation city houses. The design sought to bring in an aspect of lightness to the space which involved relocating functions and introducing the new requirements. All this had to be done around the heavy load bearing construction of the 1920s and reinforcing the existing skylights creating new ones to facilitate better quality of space and ventilation.
