Where the world offsets risks
For its standalone office in Asia, Lloyd's set an ambitious goal of creating an environment that was simultaneously modern and at one with its surroundings and the firm's long heritage.
A certain sense of uniqueness has endured at Lloyd's since its beginnings in a London coffee house more than three centuries ago. But while the firm is widely known for its distinctive traditions, it is equally renowned for its strong ethics and sense of fairness, and an ability to meet highly specialised insurance requirements.
Shanghai was the chosen location for Lloyd's first "standalone" presence in Asia, and what would be its largest office outside London. As such, the new Shanghai premises would serve as a flagship, playing the role of expressing Lloyd's commitment to China and the region as a whole. Lloyd's accordingly felt it vital that every element of the design help convey the reputation and expertise that are central to its identity.
