The project brief was to have a simple, basic residential facility close to nature, using principles of Vastu Shastra, maximizing the use of natural and re-cycled ecologically balanced materials & technologies and to attempt to make the unit self-sufficient for its cooling and energy needs.
Traditional materials, methods, technology and principles were used for natural cooling. The principles of Vastu-Shastra were applied, allowing clear flow of energy in the design. The central covered courtyard with a water body, in the center of the house generates a smooth air flow.
Used & recycled materials were used. Doors & windows from old buildings were incorporated in the design. Toilet finishes were done from old wastage. Coloured IPS is used as flooring. Arches are used to take away the major load. The thin stone slabs available locally are use as lintels. External mud plaster with mirrors to insulate from and reflect the sun rays. 18 thick wall, with sprinklers on the Manglore-tiled roof, cooling pads of khus for the window, and smooth airflow generated by the chimney action of the high covered courtyard in the centre of the house, keeps the house comfortable in summers and monsoon
