This apartment is in the pioneering Ashok Towers Estate - among the first and largest residential complexes that has emerged from amongst the new rapidly transforming erstwhile mill-area of Mumbai. As is now become the norm, these developments emphasize the tight control they keep on everything: from the entry into the Gated Community, down to the retention of all architectural & Interior elements As Given. The challenge with this project was thus as much about finding ways to circumvent restriction as it was about developing appropriate solutions to bespoke & evolving needs.
The Kasbekars are a young family of four gregarious individuals - and their apartment had to become the "Den" for themselves, as well as their close families & friends. Moreover, they also sought a gallery - quality environment for a proud collection of classic modern Indian Art.
The internal organization is developed by manipulating surfaces and materials, rather than by creating form - all of which is ultimately guided by the manner in which the Photographer acknowledges and appreciates the qualities of light.
