The Jain Residence is a typical Urban House that accommodates 3 generations of occupants. Daily operations, pragmatic social and professional requirements together with the proverbial budget constraints dominated the planning of the house. Massing ? the building was conceived by over-lapping voxels(3D Pixels). Any 3D geometry can be broken into adjacent voxels, like pixels for a 2D image. With this project we question this basic understanding of Cartesian geometry. What if these voxels were not placed adjacent to one another, conventionally sharing common boundaries (corners/surfaces)? What if they were to intersect? With this as the primer, there was constant conversation between the programming and volume derivation. The result of the volumetric play was textured with varying material to identify and highlight each voxel. Needless to say the texturing was in accordance with our clients? aesthetic preferences. Programmatically ? The ground floor operates as the interaction premise, both for visitors and for inhabitants. The Physical center of the House remains as the Family abode either as dining on the ground or Lounge on the First floor. All common areas share a visual or aural connect, with strategically placed double/triple height areas. These atriums are also the source of natural light into the otherwise deep/interior spaces. Privacy of the building increases as we elevate.
