In 1973 Ray C. Anderson founded Interface Inc. Offering floor coverings to offices and modern work places. To produce and market modular floor coverings they led a joint venture between British company, Carpets International Plc. (CI), and a group of American investors. The very first day they have only 15 employees and immediately faced a challenge of rising cost of petrochemical, which was said to be the key raw material in carpet industry at that time. The advance cutting and bonding technology helped them to sustain the business and meet demand in mid 1970s. The modular carpet growth increased and gained popularity by 1978 the sales reached $11 million and the company went public in the year 1983.

They did acquisitions to enter into the Middle Eastern and European markets. The acquisitions led to extension of the core business to woven specialty carpet-related chemical operations, broadloom carpet products, and other related office furnishings industries. They acquired Heuga Holdings B.V., which were one of the world's oldest manufacturers of carpet tiles and became world leader in modular flooring. With the introduction of its product FLOR they entered residential market in 2003. They have done more than 50 acquisitions to increase the growth and become market leader.
