SALT led a multi-disciplinary team from the Community Design Collaborative in developing an open space master plan for Hope Partnership for Education, a private middle school located in North Philadelphia.
SALT's team created a phased master plan for improving the entire campus, which included site design for a vacant lot across the street from the school. The overarching concept for Hope is about the power of light, and illuminating the community in multiple ways visually, intellectually and spiritually. Hope's mission and project presented an opportunity to improve the physical fabric of the neighborhood, establish a strong identity for Hope, and build a social network between Hope and its neighbors.
As part of the master plan, the team created a Landscape Toolkit for the campus and a Phasing Strategy for the vacant lot to help Hope implement improvements. The Phasing Strategy involves pairing each phase of construction with a special community event or activity. The intent is for the Gardens of Illumination to engage students, stakeholders, and the neighbors in a collaborative process that ultimately rejuvenates the neighborhood.
