Flooring And Tiles

Flooring is the general term for covering floor. Floor covering is a term that describes finish material applied over a floor structure to provide a walking surface. Both terms are used interchangeably but floor covering refers more to loose-laid materials. Materials almost always classified as floor covering include carpet, area rugs and resilient flooring such as linoleum or vinyl flooring. Materials commonly called flooring include wood flooring, ceramic tile, stone, terrazzo, and various seamless chemical floor coatings. Wall Tiles are glazed tiles and are generally non-vitreous. Outdoor wall tiles are mostly called cladding tiles. Decorative, highlighters, borders, mosaic tiles and mural tiles are all wall tiles. more
Clay TilesClay Tiles are clay based product (typically red or white in color). The clay is quarried, purified and then dried to create a powder (body slip). The clay is injected into a mold as dry powder then pressed at a moderate pressure rate and fired at a moderate temperature to create a bisque. The fired bisque (raw tile) is then screen printed with a pigment or pattern and a clear glaze (silica glass) is applied over the top. The tile is then re-fired causing the silica to melt and form a durable non-porous layer over the top of the pigment or pattern. The glaze can be either gloss, matte or textured made from mixture of clay and other materials that are then kiln-fired. Ceramic tiles, Vitrified tiles and Terracotta tiles are all clay tiles. Depending on their specifications these tiles can be used indoor and outdoor with many applications as wall, floors, counter tops, pavings, cladding, roofs and staircases.

Natural StoneNatural stones are stones produced by the Earth. Quarried stone is processed by polishing, brushing and hammering to improve its features, such as shine and smoothness. Natural stone flooring is the sustainable choice for everyone. It will last as many lifetimes as you wish to name. Natural stones are classified according to their mineral content and the process of their formation. Good stones are characterized by durability, hardness, strength, amenability to dressing, appearance, weight, fineness of grain, compactness, porosity and absorption. In order to be suitable as building stones, a rock should have specific qualities such as capacity to stand the ravages of time and weather, requisite strength to bear strain and super-incumbent weight, attractive colour and general appearance. Its structure must also be such as to allow quarrying into good sized blocks or planes.

Engineered StoneEngineered Stone is a composite material made of crushed stone bound together by a polymer resin. It is used primarily for kitchen countertops. Related materials include geo polymers and cast stone. Unlike terrazzo, the material is factory made in slabs, cut and polished by fabricators, and assembled at the work site. Engineered Stone is a mixture or an agglomerate of natural minerals and resin binders. Engineered Stone comes in a variety of colors. A slight color variation may occur from batch to batch due to the location from which the natural material is quarried. Also, due to the natural quartz composition of engineered stone, irregularities such as spots or color particles in the Slab may occur. Engineered stone is available both in honed and highly glossy finish. Honed finish is not generally suited for kitchen or countertops as it can attract and accumulate dirt. Glossy surfaces can be easily cleaned as compared to honed surface.

Glass FlooringGlass as a flooring option introduces new architectural opportunities allowing designers to play with color & light. A glass floor allows light to pass through it reducing the need for artificial lighting. It is transparent and usually made of a reinforced glass. Structural glass systems are designed to allow large expanses of space to be frameless & spatial. They can be put into wood, tile, stone, or concrete floors. Glass floors add richness and beauty to the space. They can be used in both residential and commercial structures. However, care has to be taken with the finished surface to avoid slipping. An etched or printed surface can improve grip and aid against slipping. Wet locations are particularly prone to slipping. The cost of the installation mainly depends on the thickness of glass used.

Translucent FlooringTranslucent flooring is prefabricated floor panels made of glass, acrylic resin (plexiglass) or polycarbonate resin. In case of translucent Glass flooring, three-layers of glass are stuck together and laminated on the surface with a translucent film and highly polished on the edges to make it look like a single piece of glass. It allows light to pass through it, thereby increasing natural light in the spaces beneath. Clear glass gives views that might not be desired, so translucent glass is often favored.

CarpetsApart from beautifying the surroundings, carpets are prominently used to pronounce the theme. Carpets can be classified on the basis of the types of fabrics or design or weaving techniques. There is a huge range of carpets available in market encircling all kinds of classifications. Most commonly used fibers to make carpets are wool, silk, jute, some synthetic fibers like nylon, polyester, olefin and acrylic out of which polyester is durable of all. Bamboo carpets and Coir carpets form a different range of eco-friendly carpets. On the basis of weaving techniques, carpets can be classified into: Hand knotted carpets, Hand woven carpets, Hand tufted carpets, Braided carpets and Namdah.

Natural & Artificial GrassNatural Grass gives a very pleasant and soothing effect to the surroundings. Grass is a very comfortable and eco-friendly product for flooring. Artificial turf is a synthetic fiber surface made to look like natural grass. It uses polyethylene yarn for fibers coated with silicone and infills that are mixtures of sand and crumb rubber (recycled rubber). Some manufacturers use silicon sand or granulate rubber as infill. It is suitable for places having heavy traffic and where there is difficulty of getting grass enough sunlight or water to stay healthy. Autumn is the best time to install a new Synthetic turf or replace the sod turf with artificial turf. Artificial turf grass costs a lot more than natural grass to install and maintain.

Aggregates & SandAggregates & Sand can be used as out door floor coverings. Aggregates are the collection of coarse rock materials such as crushed stone, sand, gravel and slag. These can be obtained by mining from earth, or by using waste slag from the manufacture of iron and steel, or by recycling of concrete. Aggregates can be classified on the basis of bulk specific gravity into lightweight, normal-weight, and heavyweight aggregates. They can also be classified on the basis of their size and shape into fine and coarse aggregates.

Concrete FlooringConcrete is the most basic and commonly used flooring material. Traditionally, concrete flooring, sometimes referred to as cement flooring, was used to be just the surface of the slab poured directly onto the gravel or dirt bed in order to install the foundation of a building. It no longer has to be gray and boring. Concrete floors can be polished smooth or textured to provide traction. They can also be painted or stained through the use of stains, stamps, dyes, tints, colored pigments, white cement, textured patterns, ornate saw cuts, epoxy overlay, and more, or embed the floor with complex printed designs. Varying looks are achieved by applying one or more of these techniques for both interior and exterior applications. It is widely seen in retail stores, trendy restaurants, offices and homes everywhere. Concrete provides an alternative to moisture-sensitive flooring materials.
Pavers, Claddings & CurbsPavers, claddings and curbs are all basically used in exteriors for landscaping, footpaths, driveways, roads, stairs, swimming pool edges and decorative functions. Pavers are hard blocks laid on flat surfaces, often made of stones or stone-derived materials. They provide a clean, hard surface for walking and driving and give an aesthetically pleasing appearance to the whole space. They are available in a variety of patterns, sizes, shapes and textures. Cladding is the application of different materials on the building exteriors whose purpose is to protect the underlying structure as well as to provide an eye-catching, decorative finish. Curb is a raised concrete border or row of joined stones used to confine an area or to separate the road or driveway from the roadside or pedestrian. They also provide structural support to the pavement edge. Curbs can be used to channel runoff water from rain or can be combined with a gutter.

Metal FlooringMetal flooring is an excellent flooring solution to the heavy traffic areas where strength and durability is the main aspect to be dealt with. It is available in tile as well as sheet form. They are made from aluminium, galvanized steel, or sometimes bronze - often recycled from other uses, so they are environmentally sound. Metal flooring can be treated to look like brass, copper, bronze and many other metals. Some of the most popular metal tiles are either made from solid metal, coated in metal glazes, or cast from polymers that are fused with real metal particles. On some of them, a cool, grey tone is dusted with fine silver particles to create a subtle radiance. This shimmer metal flooring is ideal for strong, contemporary schemes. Metal can also be processed into a satin, mirror, lacquered, or matt finish.

Rubber FlooringIn Rubber flooring, virgin rubber comes from latex, the sap of rubber trees, which typically grow in tropical areas. Rubber flooring can also be manufactured using recycled rubber. Recycled rubber flooring is usually more affordable and durable than virgin flooring. Rubber can also be installed in interlocking tiles or sheets like cork. Sheet rolls can come in quite long lengths at 36”-48" widths, making for few joints. Sheets give a seamless look, while tiles are easier to maintain as a damaged tile can easily be swapped out. Before installing rubber floors, it is essential to install a moisture-resistant sub-layer.

Vinyl FlooringVinyl flooring is also called Resilient flooring because it characteristically bounces back from the weight of objects that compress its surface. Vinyl floors are available in either tile or sheet form for both commercial and residential use. In addition, there are two basic categories of vinyl tile - solid vinyl and vinyl composition - and three basic categories of vinyl sheet - homogeneous, inlaid and layered composite. As resilient floors are durable, easier to maintain and more moisture-resistant than many alternative materials, vinyl is preferred for use in residential kitchens and bathrooms, as well as in healthcare facilities, and commercial and retail establishments.

Sustainable FlooringSustainable floorings are those floorings which are produced from materials that would otherwise gone to waste or that can be reproduced easily. Sustainable flooring can reduce the amount of chemicals present or use materials that are regionally manufactured, contain recycled content or come from a rapidly renewable resource. These floors do not emit out Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) which can pollute the air inside the home. Hence using sustainable floors made from clean, renewable resources can improve the indoor air quality of your home.

Floor Heating SystemsFloor heating systems provide warmth to the floor by using conduction, convection and radiation and control indoor climate for thermal comfort. With a floor heating system, the heat from the floor warms everything it touches and radiates throughout the room from the ground up. Radiant floor heating is an under the floor heating system that conducts heat through the floor surface, rather than through the air as in conventional forced-air heating systems and is most commonly used. Materials with thermal conducting properties, such as stone, concrete, and ceramic tile, conduct, transfer, and hold heat effectively while withstanding high temperatures and hence work best with radiant heating systems. Solid wood flooring can expand on using radiant heat while carpets have insulating properties that potentially reduces heat flow.

Adhesives & SealantsAdhesives and sealants are often named together as if they were the products of same category, but actually they have different functions. An adhesive is a compound which is when applied as a thin layer between two surfaces, joins them together so as to form a single unit. It is made up of either natural or synthetic sources. Adhesives may be watery-thin or very thick. Sealant is a material used to fill space between two substrates like joints, gaps or cavities. They are highly viscous materials with little or no flow characteristics. The main difference between adhesives and sealants is that sealants typically have lower strength and higher elongation than do adhesives.
