During medieval period the dining room was on a separate floor of the house but with the advent of modern times a dedicated dining room has been replaced by dining cum living room or placing dining tables near kitchen for convenience. However, they offer a chance to sit down and enjoy a meal together, in some homes the culture of a separate dining room is maintained even today. These are termed as luxury dining rooms. A simple dining room is furnished with dining table and dining chairs along with side tables, cabinets, bar stools etc.

 

Different types and shapes of the dining table-

  • Rectangular dining table: Suitable for spacious rooms, seats six to eight or eight plus people. A size of 36” x 72” is good for eight people. Average height is 30”.
  • Round dining table: Suitable for small to medium sized dining rooms. Diameter of 48” for four people, 54” for six people and 60” for eight people.
  • Oval dining table: Suitable for medium sized dining rooms. Six to eight people can be seated.
  • Freeform dining table: This shape has no concrete definition; basically they don’t fit into category and are abstract forms.

 

Types of dining table according to the material- 

Dining tables generally come in two, four, six and eight seater from personal snuggly space to social seating dinning sets. Some tables features a different table top material but with same build:

  • Wooden dining table: Best wood types are mahogany, walnut, maple and oak. Do not opt for plywood or hardwood which may spoil the charm of wood.
  • Glass dining table: Check out for thick, sturdy and tempered glass only.
  • Marble dining table: Needs a lot of care, check for the seepage of water before buying.
  • Rustic modern dining table: This type combines wood and metal for modern look and durability.
  • Trestle dining table: Made up of two or three trestles which serve as the base for the table top.
  • Laminate: This tabletop has multilayered construction, sturdy appeal and is water resistant surface. Eg. PVC laminate.
