In Couch our aim was to create a warm and inviting atmosphere where people could come and unwind in what could ostensibly be an extension of their living rooms.
The space is divided into a series of intimate niches delineated by burnished metal link curtains that allow for privacy yet transparency. Each nook comprises a carefully chosen mix of customized furniture, lamps and accessories spanning different time periods and genres; thus retro design classics from the 1920's through to the 1960's mix freely with a chesterfield armchair, a vintage velvet lamp, even a contemporary molded plastic chair, all coming together, as you would have in a home that has evolved tastefully over many years.
Graphics play and integral role in the design adding an ingredient of humour and narrative to the space. Highlights by our collaborators tsk design are a raw silk lamp with old-fashioned tassels with a tongue and cheek image of a lounging cat on its surface, a large burgundy and gold vintage shoe in an opulent gold frame, and antique cast iron balustrade prints on the slick glass railings.
We custom designed a shimmering chandelier for the central double height volume in layers of concentric amber and copper coloured glass beads.
The shell is essentially bare and monochromatic with polished cement walls offsetting a rough black Cudappah stone floor. Materials like rusted lacquered metal, teakwood, textured MDF, polished bison board, leather and chenille punctuate the space with tones of rust, ochre and jade.
