Bathroom Furniture

A bathroom may be described as a room we use for personal hygiene. This room may contain a toilet, sink, bathtub or a shower. In the bygone era, rooms were dedicated only for bathing but with the modern areas and less space a commode is also installed in the same room. There are different varieties of bathroom like powder room which only has a sink and a commode for guests, or a shower room - a small room adjacent to the master bedroom for more private use. A Bathroom may be described as a room we use for personal hygiene. This room may contain a toilet, sink, bathtub or a shower. In the bygone era, rooms were dedicated only for bathing but with changing times and less space a commode also got installed in the same room. There are different varieties of bathroom like powder room which only has a sink and a commode for guests, or a shower room - a small room adjacent to the master bedroom for more private use. A bathroom also needs to have some storage furniture for which there is a dedicated range of bathroom vanities which are usually flapped with bathroom mirrors, shelving and bathroom accessories.

Bathroom Cabinets-

We need cabinets for linen, medicine and storage. These may be of three types:

  • Free standing cabinet: It is just like a chest of drawers or a vanity case. Rectangular form is the most common which includes a lot of storage for nick-nacks.
  • Wall mounted cabinet: This gives a more modern look to the bathroom decor as it leaves the underneath floor open and thus creates the illusion of open spaces.
  • Corner cabinet: This is the space saver option especially if one has a smaller bathroom. All the custom made corner cabinets have a 90 degree angle at the back to give them a perfect fit into the corners.

Materials for Bathroom Cabinets-

  • Wooden cabinets
  • Fiberboard or MDF covered with laminate
  • Particle board or plywood
  • Stainless steel cabinets
  • Chrome cabinets
  • Plastic cabinets
  • Glass cabinets

Bathroom Corner Shelves and Cabinets-

Bathroom can be made to look more spacious by installing corner shelves and cabinets.

  • Install a mirrored corner bathroom wall unit with single or double door.
  • Under sink storage is more prevalent in corner shelves and cabinets than the regular fitted ones.
  • Use light coloured corner shelves to make a small bathroom appear big.
  • Use three drawer corner cabinet made up of wicker for a rustic feeling
  • Corner shelves are a good option for the guest room.
  • Place bathroom shelves to store daily vanity for easy reach and quotes to encourage each morning.

Choosing the Sink type and Vanity as per style-

The decor of your bathroom must be in sync with the decor of the rest of the house.  Same goes with choosing the type of the sink and the vanity for your bathroom.

  • Contemporary: The houses with a contemporary decor can opt for a top mount drop in sink which is installed directly over the counter. Mix and match the counter with the shelf underneath like stone-wood or glass-wood. If wood seems costly then we can choose chrome /glass/plastic for creating the shelf.
  • Modern: A modern decor house can opt for an underneath sink to give a cleaner look to the counter. It is designed to install under the counter and has no exposed edges. This also goes best with a wall mounted wooden /chrome/plastic vanity shelf.
  • Traditional: A traditional decor can opt for any type of sink but lays stress on the detailing of underneath shelf which should have paneled doors and intricately carved wooden drawers with ornate holders.
  • Rustic: This type ofdecor has more relaxed look which can opt for bowl shaped sinks and combine it with wood/metal/stone shelves.

Tips for Small Bathrooms-

  • Add a shelf above the sink.
  • Use narrow pull out cabinets instead of wider ones.
  • Sink console instead of vanities as they tend to be large in size.
  • Place a wooden shelf above the door for keeping things.
  • Install hooks inside the cabinets for hanging up dryers.
  • Hang racks on the wall instead of free standing cabinets as it will free up floor space.
  • Use corner sink and bathroom corner cabinets for saving space.
