The university is to be set up on 79 acres of land located on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Promoted by the Azim Premji Foundation, led by Mr. Azim Premji, the founder of Wipro Technologies, the university sets to redefine the educational scene in the country. It seeks to achieve this revolution by targeting the teacher instead of the student. Thus the investment made in this would be replicated over the country, with the completion of each educational cycle. The strategic vision framed for the university states that ?it will be an institution for learning that works to realize the potential of a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society where people leave in dignity, peace, harmony and well-being.?
As you approach the campus from the access road, you get a fleeting glimpse of the main entrance pavilion, which lies on one of the central spine of the University. The vehicular traffic movement is kept on the periphery of the campus; thus giving way to a huge central area mainly for pedestrians. The foundation office on one side and a lecture hall on the other side flank the entrance pavilion. The curved wall of the lecture hall draws you further in, leading to a circular pavilion, which forms one of the big congregating spaces for students. Perpendicular to this is the Knowledge Centre at one end and a semicircular Dining Hall at the other.
The second spine starts at the base of the Foundation office and leads to the first Universal Hostel, a residential tower for undergraduate and graduate students. This path, which forms the main artery for pedestrian traffic, connects to another similar student residential tower with a two level Dining Hall acting as a hinge between them. Also a grade difference helps in connecting the two levels of the Dining Hall to the two Universal Hostel towers at two levels.
The Dining Hall has a huge semi covered courtyard attached to it, which is an ideal space for informal activities to take place. Beyond the second tower, is the Academic Cluster, which has classrooms, labs and a few administration and office spaces. The classrooms are arranged around a courtyard; further these courtyards are also linked to one another. The faculty offices and support activities are housed in five low-rise towers that are placed along the spine. The penultimate courtyard is linked across to the amphitheater, which has two lecture halls as its backdrop. This amphitheater also forms one end of the central spine. Behind the lecture halls, tucked away are the faculty housing towers, with on grade parking.
