To propose a central visitor centre to collect & spill out people together from one point, help decongesting the original layout and provide alternate circulation layout.
Essel World & Water Kingdom is the largest amusement and water theme park in India. Situated in Gorai Island, this is the only international-style amusement park built within Mumbai. The park is divided into two major sections, Essel World (amusement park) and Water Kingdom (water park), which was added to the park in 1998. The amusement park offers a variety of exciting rides, games and other attractions like standard roller coaster and adventure themes. Water Kingdom has waterslides for adults and kids, a drifting river and various theme cruises. Spread across an area of 260,000 sq. m, this amusement park is frequented by 10,000 visitors every day.
The final result was a square modular unit, expanding along its axis into multi units. The courtyards forming the lungs of the layout, they shift to periphery and back into centre as per the planning need and requirements. Thus a classic model for a unit is achieved with equal proportioning of greens and browns.
Arris proposed of a symmetrical layout, considering the original plan as small and insufficient. Two strong arms of circulation roads when added create an additional point of access thereby decongesting the original setting. The roads lead up to the podium or upper level lobby which helps bypass lower public areas of shower, pool, commercial kiosks. Such a setting offers a direct entry onto the premises with a scenic view of the water kingdom. A complete light weight roofing system was developed, which also evolved as an architecture statement. Fancy flights of staircases & connecting air-bridges, from the podium to the water kingdom added interesting vistas to the long path towards the water play.
